COMMUNICATION AND OUTREACH (COG) PROGRAM 2004-2006


GSSG NEWSLETTERS


There are 3 projects in the COG Program, these are:

  1. Electronic Communication;
  2. Publications; and
  3. Liaison

Program Coordinator: Mr Glenn Johnstone, Australia

Program Objective:

To provide information on Antarctic geodesy and geographic information to the scientific and general community.


1. Electronic Communication

Goal: To assist the Standing Scientific Group in achieving its objectives.

Activities:

  1. Expand and maintain website for GSSG and host at Geoscience Australia
    [web statistics from 1 July 2002 to 30 June 2003 are available]
    [web statistics from 1 July 2001 to 30 June 2002 are available]
    [web statistics from 1 July 2000 to 30 June 2001 are available]
    [web statistics from 1 July 1999 to 30 June 2000 are available]
  2. Amalgamate existing web resources (such as the ANTEC site) into the new site
  3. Maintain listservers
  4. Maintain the list of contacts for the exchange of map, chart and geographic publications
  5. Maintain the list of distributors of Antarctic maps

2. Publications

Goal: To publicise GSSG activities.

Activities:

  1. Publications
    Develop a bibliography of key GSSG papers
    – Encourage Action Groups and Projects to publish their work in a timely manner
  2. Produce support materials for Antarctic geoscience related conferences, workshop, symposia etc on GSSG activities.
  3. ‘Best practice’ guidelines on observatory related activities and data management
  4. Maintain metadata for GSSG products in the Antarctic Master Directory

3. Liaison

Goal: To establish and maintain communication between GSSG members, SCAR and related external bodies.

Activities:

  1. Continued liaison at a working level with key SCAR and non-SCAR bodies
    - Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, Data and ATS Standing Committees
    - COMNAP (STADM / JCADM)
    - Committee for Environmental Protection (CEP)
    - Relevant IUGG groups
    - International Steering Committee for Global Mapping (ISCGM)
    - Digital Earth
    - Global Spatial Data Infrastructure (GSDI)
    - ISO TC211
